A good multi-core processor for a server should have high computing capabilities and performance when it is needed, even though it is running continuously for a long time. Laptops or computers do not need this much computing power, as they do not support more than one user at a time. Servers, on the other hand, can share information and data of various types simultaneously with all users connected to them. For this reason, technological solutions in server processors should maintain constant operation at a low level that saves energy consumption during moments when servers are not sending data to users.
Server processor vs consumer processor - what are the differences?
Typical personal computers are based on single-processor motherboards, it is rare to find dual-processor solutions or solutions for more CPUs. However, servers work under a heavy load and therefore require slots for several to over a dozen processors. Due to such advanced constructions, servers generate huge amounts of heat during continuous operation and require special ventilation applications to maintain optimum equipment temperature.
Laptops and personal computers are not designed to handle such components, so it is not even worth thinking about adding server components to a PC to boost performance. In addition, server components are incompatible with personal computer motherboards, so home equipment will not be able to handle either server ECC (Error Correction Code) RAM or the potential of a server CPU.
