Network cards for servers

Network cards in laptops and PCs are components that enable the computer to communicate with the Internet. In the case of servers, a server network card must be used to connect them to the local network, including, for example, the personal computers of the employees of a particular company.

A network card has a physical, unique and theoretically unchangeable MAC address with which it can be identified. It is needed to recognise a particular network user. The MAC address is stored in ROM at the factory. Server network cards affect the performance of the system and allow data packets to be transmitted between the links of a local network. If the PCs on the network have an internet connection, the server will have one too, although the network card does not need to connect to the internet - it can only operate on local connections.

What is a network card used for? What should I look for?

A network card transforms data packets into signals available to computers connected to a given local network. It makes it possible to store information and to dispose of it within a given company. It encrypts and transmits information in the form of various types of files. Network cards work in one of several standards: Ethernet, Token Ring or FDDI or ArcNet. A given card cannot be reprogrammed to work on several of these at the same time.

Network cards for servers should be characterised by appropriately matched data transmission speed - the efficiency of the IT system will depend on this parameter. Our offer includes systems enabling communication at speeds from 1 to 200 Gb/s. It is also worth paying attention to the type and number of ports offered by a given network card. The more ports, the greater the possibility of connecting different.

Network cards - types

Network cards may be differentiated according to the offered data transfer rate, although the main criterion for division is the type of assembling - there are external and internal cards. External network cards are universal equipment, which can be connected to a computer with the use of e.g. a USB port, although such a solution works mainly where a given device does not always need access to the local network. As a rule, an internal network card remains a choice, as it provides greater security in the case of servers.

In our offer you will find network cards with RJ45, SFP, SFP+, QSFP+, QSFP28 or QSFP56 ports. Those with a built-in SFP port are considered to be the most universal, as they can be extended with inserts supporting a fibre link or other inserts, e.g. with an RJ45 port.
